There’s a certain kind of smart home experience that has aged poorly. The one where every simple action requires a tiny negotiation with a glowing rectangle. Want to dim the bedside lights? Wake the screen. Find the app. Navigate to the right room and product. Adjust the level. And only then realize that your significant other has already reached for the lamp switch.
That frustration is at the center of a recent design conversation around touch panels in the home. Earlier this year, Architectural Digest declared that old-fashioned switches and buttons are back in vogue, framing the shift as part of a broader luxury move away from visible technology and toward tactile, visually quiet controls. Shortly thereafter, Residential Tech Today asked whether the touch panel is nearing its end, pointing instead to voice control, ambient sensing, and context-aware systems.
Taken at headline level, that narrative is tempting. Screens have had their moment, clients are tired of them, and the luxury home is going analog again. But that’s too simple a take. What I get out of it is this idea that the luxury smart home is becoming more selective. Clients aren’t rejecting technology. They’re rejecting friction.
That distinction came through clearly in a recent Connected Design Podcast conversation I had with Giles Sutton, director of business development at Crestron, and Michael Short, Crestron’s global vice president of marketing. Sutton’s response to the backlash was less defensive than corrective. The articles, he said, framed the issue as an “either-or” conversation as opposed to “having an ‘and.’”
That “and” may be the whole story.
Buttons Are “Back” Because Design Never Left
I’ve jested recently about the absurdity of hot takes—and the death of the touchscreen is one. But the AD piece is worth taking a serious look at because it reflects something many designers and integrators already know. Clients don’t experience a smart home through a rack, processor, or programming architecture. They experience it through the thing they touch at 6:30 a.m., when they’re trying to raise the shades, make coffee, and get the lighting right without having to think about it.
And in high-end interiors, it extends beyond a simple control point. There, it’s viewed through the hardware lens. It has finish, proportion, location, and permanence. If it sits next to plaster, stone, millwork, or custom metalwork, it becomes part of the room’s visual language whether the technology team intends that or not.
That’s why this “return of beautiful switches, dimmers, and keypads” isn’t a rejection of smart panels. Rather, it’s a correction to lazy interface placement. A bronze Forbes and Lomax dimmer, a Meljac keypad, a Lutron keypad, or a minimal tactile station can still be part of a deeply integrated system. It simply lets the room feel less like a dashboard.

The data supports the stakes of that design conversation. A 2025 NKBA | KBIS and CEDIA study found that homeowners completing smart-technology projects allocated about 20 percent of the overall budget to smart home integration, or roughly $41,000 for the average whole-home project. The same report found that 61 percent of respondents see integrated technology as a future “must-have,” while 40 percent cited lighting controls as the smart feature most frequently requested in kitchens. In other words, this isn’t some fringe category. It’s already a part of the core design infrastructure.
What we’re seeing, though, is that control interfaces need to be specified with the same care as lighting temperature, hardware finish, and sightlines. If the control experience feels clumsy, the client won’t care how elegant the system is behind the wall.
The Case Against the Touch Panel Is Really a Case Against Misuse
What that tells us then is that the strongest argument against the touch panel isn’t about aesthetics. It’s behavioral.
Some actions shouldn’t require navigation. Nobody should need to open a screen to turn on a light in the middle of the night. Sutton said as much on the podcast, noting that no integrator would reasonably suggest a bedside lighting experience that requires a client to go to a panel, open an app, and drill into a scene just to move safely through the room.
That’s where tactile (or voice) control wins. It is immediate, learnable, and often usable without looking. A well-labeled keypad or a familiar switch can disappear into muscle memory. In that sense, the analog-feeling interface is not nostalgic. It is ergonomic. And, while it may not be as second-nature quite yet as flipping a switch, the same argument could be made for voice control, where asking your platform of choice to turn on the bedside lamp becomes easier and safer than fumbling through your phone or a bedside touch panel.
Short made a similar point from the manufacturer side: “Touchscreens don’t replace light switches or keypads on the wall.” Instead, he argued, they belong in specific areas, often paired with keypads in entry points, kitchens, and other control-rich zones.
In that context, it’s easier to understand how a touch panel’s real value begins where a switch’s usefulness ends. Viewing a camera, adjusting a multi-room audio source, editing a lighting scene, paging another room, managing security, or selecting a more complex mode for the house requires more context than a single button can elegantly provide.

Sutton put it plainly: there are things “you can only do on touchscreens,” from viewing a CCTV camera to editing a lighting scene. Without that layer, the pursuit of simplicity can actually have the adverse effect, creating its own complexity.
And that, ultimately, is the paradox of this entire conversation. A home with no visible technology can still feel overcomplicated if the client has to decode banks of unlabeled switches. A home with one well-placed touch panel can feel calmer if it consolidates security, cameras, music, scenes, and intercom into a single intentional point of interaction.
Voice and Ambient Control Are Additive, Not Absolute
The Residential Tech Today article broadens the discussion by pointing to voice, sensing, AI, and context-aware systems. That is a real shift. Voice can remove friction in situations where touch is inconvenient, and sensing can help the home respond without requiring the client to initiate every command.
Recent consumer data shows why that shift is believable. A recent Pew Research Center survey on consumer use of AI found that 35 percent of U.S. adults have a smart speaker, with adoption rising to 41 percent among adults ages 30 to 49. Smart doorbells and smart thermostats were also present in 18 percent and 11 percent of U.S. adults’ homes, respectively. Voice and AI-enabled home devices are no longer novelties for early adopters.
At the same time, voice is not the universal interface. It can be awkward with guests, imprecise in noisy rooms, and inappropriate for private commands. Nobody wants to ask a voice assistant to browse cameras in the foyer while a dinner party is underway. And why be forced to remember the exact phrase for a nuanced lighting scene when a labeled keypad would do?
Short’s response to the “future is multimodal” framing was telling. “That’s what we do now,” he said, describing homes that already combine keypads, voice, automation, sensing, touch, and environmental control.
In other words, the future of luxury control is not screenless. It is less single-minded.
The Real Problem Is Orchestration
If the industry needs a villain, it is not the touch panel. It is fragmentation.
Parks Associates reported that adoption of any core smart home device reached 49 percent of U.S. internet households in the second half of 2025. That same Parks analysis points to AI platform expansion, Matter, ecosystem control, and simple automations as key forces heading into 2026.
But adoption does not equal elegance. In a Parks Associates study with Schneider Electric, only 40 percent of households with smart home devices had those devices acting in concert, and 39 percent of that group had trouble coordinating multiple devices. That’s the everyday pain point hiding behind the touch panel debate. Consumers don’t simply want fewer screens. They want fewer disconnected decisions.

For the luxury market, this is where the integrator’s role becomes more valuable. CEDIA’s U.S. Professional Smart Home Market Analysis estimated the U.S. professional smart home market at $29 billion, with roughly 20,000 integrators serving the market and more than 80 percent reporting significant influence over customer purchasing decisions. The categories expected to grow most included lighting and shading, lighting control systems, and security systems—the exact categories where control design matters most.
Lighting and shading are not just product categories. They define mood, privacy, circadian rhythm, architecture, and the way a room transforms across the day. Security and access control are not just devices. They shape the threshold between public and private life. If those experiences are split across too many apps, screens, or unlabeled switches, the home may be technically capable but experientially weak.
And, even worse, it would reflect a lack of coordination between the design and integration teams.
Luxury Means Asking Less of the Client
The most useful standard may be this: the luxury smart home should ask as little of the client as possible while giving them confidence that everything is available when needed.
Sometimes that means a tactile keypad that turns an entire room into a scene. Sometimes it means a switch that looks and feels conventional but belongs to an intelligent lighting system. Sometimes it means voice, because hands are full or the command is casual. Sometimes it means automation or sensing, because the best interaction is no interaction. And sometimes it means a touch panel, because the client needs rich control, visual feedback, and access to multiple subsystems from one place.
Short described the panel as “the heartbeat of the room” in certain spaces, especially an open-plan kitchen where music, scenes, paging, search, and room-to-room control converge. That’s a useful image, as long as the industry does not mistake heartbeat for spectacle. The touch panel shouldn’t be there to prove the home is smart. It should be there because the room needs a center of command.
That’s also where the design-build collaboration has to improve. The decision about where a panel goes shouldn’t be left until trim-out, and the decision about whether a keypad should look analog, architectural, decorative, or invisible should not be made only by the technology team. These are shared design decisions. They affect elevations, circulation, finish schedules, client education, and the way the completed home feels under daily use.
The Better Conversation
The death of the touch panel makes for a good headline. It does not make for a good design strategy.
The better conversation is more nuanced: Which actions should be instant? Which should be visible? Which should be automated? Which require feedback? Which interfaces should disappear, and which should be celebrated as hardware? Where does the client need confidence, and where do they need restraint?
Touch panels are not going away in luxury smart homes because the systems themselves are not getting simpler. If anything, they’re expanding into even more categories that require nuanced control over the entertainment, and environmental intelligence. What is going away is the assumption that a screen is the right answer by default.
That is a healthy evolution. The best luxury technology has never been about maximum visibility. It has been about discretion, reliability, and control that feels almost obvious.
Buttons are back. Voice is rising. Ambient intelligence is coming quickly. But the touch panel still holds its place in the luxury residential market. The challenge now is not choosing a winner. It’s designing the handoff between them so well that the homeowner never has to think about the interface at all.
