A Sound System Fit for a Superyacht

A 177-foot, 776-gross-ton superyacht built to host up to 16 guests and 14 crew is not the first place one expects to find the work of a Montana-based audio team. But that is part of what makes this marine installation so interesting. The owner wanted the same sense of energy and musical immediacy he had experienced at a private event on land, translated to a vessel where guests move from the sun deck to the owner’s deck to the main deck to water-level activities throughout the day.

Montana Pro Audio had already earned the owner’s trust on an earlier 114-foot vessel. When the new yacht arrived, the assignment became larger and more exacting: create a concert-grade entertainment platform that could feel polished enough for a luxury superyacht, resilient enough for salt air and spray, and flexible enough for a DJ to set up wherever the gathering naturally moved.

To accomplish that goal, the team turned to L-Acoustics to create a superyacht-worthy sound system.

Designing for Movement

Phase One focuses on the exterior social spaces. The sun deck, owner’s deck, and main deck each received dedicated loudspeakers and subwoofers, selected to maintain controlled coverage without turning the architecture into an equipment showcase. The install is not just about volume; it is about maintaining a consistent experience as guests move through very different outdoor zones.

The most memorable example is in the boat garage at the lower stern. Montana Pro Audio mounted a pair of loudspeakers and a subwoofer to the underside of the overhead garage door. When the door rises, the system is positioned for the yacht’s beach-club moment, supporting music and activities at the waterline without requiring a temporary setup.

“In terms of AV, the goal was to outfit the vessel with discreet, professional-level products that provide a nightclub-level audio experience throughout the boat,” says Aaron Fisher, director of business development at Montana Pro Audio.

One DJ System, Multiple Destinations

Rather than tie entertainment to a single deck, the team designed a deployable DJ system that can be patched into different locations. Patch panels throughout the vessel provide outputs for left-right sub and DJ fill, a multi-pin input for DJ equipment, and a port for an Allen & Heath digital stage box. From there, music can be routed across the yacht’s audio zones.

“The DJ can easily patch their system to any patch panel located on the decks, or in the boat garage,” Fisher explains. “The music can then be routed to all audio locations throughout the vessel.”

Marine Conditions Shape the Spec

Marine work raises the stakes for every product decision. Equipment must hold up to humidity, salt air and spray while still meeting the visual expectations of a luxury environment. For this project, weather-rated professional audio components helped the team keep the installation moving without treating environmental protection as an afterthought.

The constrained spaces also shifted the tuning conversation. In intimate areas, maximum sound pressure level is not always the priority. Fisher notes that system presets allowing extended frequency bandwidth gave the team room to tune for impact and musicality while preserving the comfort of each space.

Collaboration Below the Surface

As with many high-end residential and marine projects, the success of the visible experience depended on careful invisible work. Montana Pro Audio coordinated with the yacht’s engineers, who knew the vessel’s structure, cable paths, penetrations and limits in detail. That knowledge was critical to integrating the system without compromising the yacht’s construction or finish.

Manufacturer support also played a role, particularly through acoustic modeling and calibration guidance. The result is a project that feels less like a collection of outdoor speakers and more like an entertainment infrastructure matched to how the owner and guests actually use the yacht.

What Comes Next

Phase Two, planned for 2027, will extend the system inside the yacht, including the main salon, dining room, media room, owner’s suite, gym and wheelhouse. A deployable bow system is also planned. Once complete, the project will connect the vessel’s exterior and interior entertainment zones into a broader whole.

For the design/build and integration channel, the installation is a useful reminder that marine projects are not simply outdoor audio jobs with a better view. They demand a blend of environmental planning, architectural restraint, serviceability, crew collaboration and lifestyle thinking. Done well, the technology disappears into the voyage and lets the experience lead.
