Nestled within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Val d’Orcia, Italy, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is far more than a luxury resort. Spanning 5,000 acres of rolling Tuscan countryside, the estate combines centuries-old farmhouses, ultra-private villas, vineyards, restaurants, and wellness spaces into an immersive hospitality experience rooted in heritage and refinement.
For Rosewood, preserving the authenticity of the property during a recent modernization project was just as important as elevating the guest experience through technology. The challenge was clear: create a seamless smart home ecosystem sophisticated enough to support today’s luxury expectations, while remaining elegantly invisible to guests.
Designed Around Personalization
Each of the estate’s nine villas is architecturally unique, with layouts, finishes, and guest experiences tailored to the character of the residence itself. Yet Rosewood required consistency behind the scenes — a standardized technology backbone that could simplify estate-wide management while adapting to the individuality of each villa.
“The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco property stands out for its balance of consistency and individuality,” said Claudio Contigliani, Managing Director and Partner at Nextdomus Srl, the system integrator behind the project. “Every villa runs on the same technology backbone, yet each is uniquely programmed and completely invisible to guests.”
That philosophy became the guiding principle for the entire automation strategy.
Nextdomus Srl approached the project with a hospitality-first mindset, designing a modular and flexible automation platform that could adapt effortlessly to each residence while maintaining an intuitive and familiar user experience throughout the estate. Rather than overwhelming guests with complexity, the system emphasizes subtle convenience and personalization. Automated scenes were programmed intentionally around guest routines, while manual controls remain easily accessible for those who prefer a more hands-on experience.
Lighting played a particularly important role in shaping the atmosphere of the property. Across villas, restaurants, outdoor entertaining areas, and wellness spaces, lighting scenes guide the guest experience from morning routines to evening relaxation. Preconfigured settings such as “Welcome” and “Good Night” allow guests to instantly transform the mood of a space with a single touch.
Careful attention was also given to the climate control functionality of the property. A network of Crestron Horizon thermostats enable zoned temperature management throughout the villas, allowing guests to personalize comfort levels while staff maintains operational oversight across the property. Adjustable fan speeds, temperature limits, and Celsius or Fahrenheit selection create a familiar experience for international travelers.
According to Contigliani, the intelligence of the system extends well beyond simple automation. “These controls do more than just adjust intensity,” he explains. “They respond to natural light, guest time zones, music preferences, and even adjust climate based on the weather outside.”
Creating a Unified Entertainment and Wellness Experience
Entertainment throughout the property was designed with the same philosophy of personalization and simplicity. Guests can enjoy their favorite shows in private living spaces, stream curated music playlists throughout an entire villa, or create room-by-room entertainment environments that evolve naturally throughout the day.
The experience goes beyond traditional AV integration by allowing guests to simultaneously control audio, lighting, climate, and content from a single interface, creating immersive environments tailored to relaxation, entertaining, or wellness.
At the core of the project is Crestron Home OS, which delivers responsive room-by-room control while maintaining operational consistency across the estate. The centralized infrastructure also allows Rosewood’s concierge and operations teams to monitor and manage villas, restaurants, the spa, a wine store, and common areas property-wide through a Crestron XPanel interface.
The balance of individualized guest control and centralized operational management proved critical for a property operating at such a large scale.
Balancing Heritage and Luxury
Perhaps the most impressive achievement of the project is what guests don’t notice. Technology throughout Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco was intentionally designed to disappear into the architecture and hospitality experience rather than dominate it. Interfaces remain discreet, controls feel intuitive, and automation quietly enhances comfort without distracting from the estate’s historic character.
The result is a fully connected hospitality ecosystem where every villa functions as an autonomous smart home while remaining seamlessly integrated into the broader operations of the estate. Multilingual interfaces and custom UI themes aligned with the Rosewood brand further reinforce the feeling of understated luxury.
“This property reflects the pinnacle of smart home automation within a heritage hospitality setting,” says Contigliani. “What sets this project apart is not just the controls that are available, but how it disappears into the experience.”
Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco offers a compelling example of how modern automation can enhance hospitality environments without compromising authenticity, architecture, or emotional connection to place.
